What GPA Do US Universities Require?

GPA is the Grade Point Average. It is rated from 0.0 to 4.0 in the US. Your GPA is a way for universities to gauge your performance in school.

There are two different kinds of GPAs that you should be familiar with.

The lowest grade that a university will accept is the minimum GPA. If you are under this number, the university won’t even consider your application.

The competitive GPA is the one that has a good chance to get you in. A large number of students who apply have a GPA higher than the minimum. So you need to aim for the competitive GPA, not just the minimum.

This is a quick guide to GPA for undergraduate admission to US universities.

Many mid-level universities require a GPA of at least 3.0. Strong state universities have a GPA of 3.3 to 3.5. Selective universities require a GPA of 3.7–3.9. Most students at the Ivy League schools have a GPA of 3.9 to 4.0.

If you are interested in studying in the USA, it is important that you know your approximate GPA. Later in this guide, we will tell you how to convert your Pakistani percentage.

SAT Score Requirements for Top US Universities (2026)

The SAT is an examination of your abilities in math and reading. The total of all the scores is 1600. Your SAT score is considered when you are reviewing the application process at many colleges in the U.S.

Most colleges are test optional in 2026. This means that you don’t have to include your SAT score. But it does not mean that scores are not important. It will benefit your application if your SAT score is high. If your score is low, it may be better not to send it.

Here’s a quick overview of the SAT requirements for various schools.

For less selective universities, such as Arizona State or Indiana University, a score of 1050 to 1200 is acceptable. A score between 1200 and 1350 is considered good for mid-level state universities such as Ohio State, Penn State and Texas A&M.

For institutions such as University of Texas, Boston University and NYU, you will require a score of 1350 to 1450. At UCLA, UC Berkeley and University of Michigan, a score of 1450 to 1530 is considered to be expected. For Harvard, MIT, Stanford and Yale, you’ll need a score of 1530 to 1600.

The SAT performance of Pakistani students with strong mathematical ability is very good. The math section is well organized. Registration for the SAT is done on the official College Board website.

GPA Conversion for Pakistani Students

This section is very significant for Pakistani students. In Pakistan, they use percentage system. A GPA system is used in the United States at universities. The two systems are distinct and you must know how to do the conversion.

The top scholarship providers are:

Below is the breakdown of all the qualifications recognized by US universities.

Matric (Secondary School Certificate) Matric is equivalent to around 10th grade in the USA. Most universities pay attention to your Intermediate results for undergraduate admission. But Matric grades show your academic history.

Intermediate (HSSC) This is the most important document for US undergraduate admissions. The Intermediate percentage will be closely scrutinized by Universities as an indicator of your academic skills.

A Levels are highly recognized by US universities. They are similar to Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Excellent A Level results can significantly enhance your application. They can sometimes even earn you college credits!

O Levels O Levels are equivalent to Matric or US 9th to 10th grade. These have less significance in undergraduate applications but they are still counted in your academic record.

WES Credential Evaluation For graduate programs and some undergraduate programs, you may need to get your documents evaluated by World Education Services (WES). WES will calculate your Pakistani grades and convert them to a US GPA. This is a common thing that students do when applying to graduate programs.

Pro Tip:

Don’t just apply for popular scholarships. Apply for “less crowded” university-specific funding. Your chances increase significantly.

Percentage to GPA Conversion for Pakistani Students

There is no official formula to convert Pakistani percentage to US GPA. There are a few slight variations in the tables used by different universities and evaluators. The table below will give you a good approximation, however.

Pakistani Percentage Approximate US GPA
90 percent and above 4.0
85 to 89 percent 3.7
80 to 84 percent 3.5
75 to 79 percent 3.3
70 to 74 percent 3.0
65 to 69 percent 2.7
60 to 64 percent 2.5
Below 60 percent Below 2.5

Let’s take a simple example. Your approximate US GPA is approximately 3.3 if you get 78% in Intermediate. This implies that you can apply to several universities which are situated at the middle level in the state. However, it may be a disadvantage for top-tier colleges.

This table is a best estimate only. Don’t apply with any number that you calculate. If you apply, always include percentage, it will be done by the university team. WES evaluation is the most reliable for formal applications.

Can You Get Admission with a Low GPA?

Yes, but, it depends on your GPA and the universities you are aiming for.

This is not the minimum grade for most universities, and is 2.5 GPA (roughly 60 percent to 64 percent). Open enrollment schools and community colleges are your best choices. There are several pathway programs that will also accept you at this level.

This will be considered by a few State universities (GPA between about 65 to 68 percent), particularly in their conditional admission programs. Arizona State University is one of the most open universities for students at this level.

3.0 GPA (about 70 to 74 percent) This will give you access to many good universities. Other schools that have a 3.0 GPA for international students include Ohio State, Penn State, Texas A&M, Purdue, University of Washington, and Michigan State.

3.2 GPA (about 75-78 percent): This is a good GPA for many of the middle-tier universities. Your prospects are also greatly enhanced if you have a strong personal statement and have good English scores.

Conditional Admission: A few US universities will accept international students with a slightly lower grade. You get accepted on the condition that you first complete an English or academic foundation program. This is an actual and popular route.

You can also begin at a US community college as a Pathway Program. You can transfer to a 4-year university after a year or two with good grades. There are many community colleges that have formal agreements with universities for this very reason.

What GPA Do I Need to Get Into Ohio State as an International Student?

The Ohio State University (OSU) is among the most sought after universities in the USA for Pakistani students. It is a large public research university with an excellent engineering, business and computer science program.

The typical GPA requirement for international undergraduate students is 3.0. This translates to approximately 70-74% in Pakistani denominations. The average GPA of admitted international students is more like 3.7, however. If you are at 75-80 percent Intermediate, you’re in a decent spot. If the score is above 85 percent, you are a good applicant.

Ohio State is a test-optional school for 2026. Your SAT score is not required. If you have a score between 1250 and 1430, it’s likely to benefit your application.

English Language Requirements – One of the following scores will be required. IELTS minimum of 6.5. IELTS 4.5. Duolingo English Test (DET) 105.

Tips for Pakistani Students Applying to Ohio State Aim for 80 percent or higher in Intermediate. Prepare a personal statement that is well focused and well written.

Can I Get Into US Universities with a 3.0 GPA?

Yes. Many well known and respected US universities accept a 3.0 GPA. You don’t have to settle for a school that is not known.

Some universities that have a regular acceptance rate for international students with a 3.0 GPA include Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Texas A&M, Michigan State, University of Minnesota, University of Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Indiana University.

Scholarships with a 3.0 GPA Full merit scholarships at top universities are unlikely with a 3.0 GPA. However, some scholarships are available and there are need-blind scholarships. Some colleges automatically award scholarships for GPA ranges and a 3.0 may earn you some basic scholarships. The Study Beyond scholarships page is where you can learn more about scholarships available for international students.

How to Make Your Application Stronger If your grades are average, the rest of your application must be strong. What you can do:

Make a very good personal statement. Introduce yourself, your motivation for attending the program, and your plans for post graduation. Even if a student has a weak GPA, they can still get in if they have a strong personal narrative.

Request solid letters of recommendation. Select teachers or supervisors who will be able to speak specific things about your skills and character.

Write down extra-curricular activities. Grades aren’t the only thing that reveal who you are, and they can be complemented by clubs, competitions, volunteer work, and part-time jobs.

Improve your IELTS or TOEFL band score. A high score above the minimum demonstrates your readiness for education in English to Universities.

Factors Beyond GPA and SAT

US university admission considers your overall picture, not just your grades. Here are other factors to consider.

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

This is where you can introduce yourself to the university and express your interest in studying there. A good SOP should provide an explanation of your background, your objectives, and why the particular programme is a good fit for you. Don’t write something that is very general. Specify the University and the program.

Recommendation Letters

Most universities need two or three letters. These should be from individuals who are familiar with your work and have something positive to say about you. It’s not simply “this student is good. It’s not just “this student is good. Specific details matter.

English Language Tests

IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo English Test scores are required. The most frequently asked requirements are shown below.

Most Universities require a score of 6.0 – 7.0. The most common minimum is 6.5.

TOEFL iBT

The score requirements for most universities are 79 – 100. Many test-optional schools will accept a Duolingo English Test score between 100 and 125.

CV / Resume

For graduate programs, a well-organized CV, listing your education, experience, research, and skills is very important.

Interviews

There are brief interviews, typically online, at some universities. Be prepared to discuss your academic interests and plans.

Any extracurricular or Leadership

Volunteer activities, student clubs, sports, community projects, or research experiences are a plus. The best colleges want to hire students who will be involved in campus life, not just in class.

Tips to Improve Your Admission Chances

Compose a concise personal letter. Avoid using the same SOP for all universities. Do some research on the program, refer to certain courses or professors, and give a reason why that school is the best choice for you.

Apply early. There are many universities with Early Decision or Early Action programs. It’s beneficial to apply at the first round. Early round acceptance rates tend to be higher.

Create a well-rounded list of colleges. Apply to a variety of schools. Have some that are a stretch, some that are a good match, and some that you are very likely to get in. If your GPA is average, it’s a bad idea to apply to the most selective schools.

Enhance your English marks. If your IELTS or TOEFL score is at the minimum, try to retake the test. You can move from conditional to unconditional admission if you get more points.

Create an extra curricular profile. While you are still in school, or just beginning your career, join clubs, volunteer, and compete. These activities are extremely difficult to add on later.

Research scholarships early. A number of scholarship deadlines precede or coincide with admission deadlines. Begin to research scholarships 6-12 months prior to your intended application. We have a USA scholarships guide for you to get started.

Don’t miss deadlines. Deadlines are very strictly observed at the US universities. Even with a strong profile, a late application is not considered.
