Need Blind & Merit Based Aid Guide
Details about all of Stanford's financial aid offerings, from need-blind to merit-based awards, fellowships, and tips for getting in from far away!
Why Stanford's Scholarship System Stands Out
The Stanford University is one of the best universities in the world and also provides good financial support to students.
One of the greatest advantages is that 100% of a student's financial needs will be met at Stanford. If you've been accepted, don't let financial worries deter you from going to study there.
Usually tuition is free for families with an income of less than $75,000 per year. When families fall in the range of $75,000 to $150,000, students generally don't have to pay for most of their expenses as Stanford will cover the greater portion through grants.
This is why Stanford is an ideal option for students with talent from diverse backgrounds, including Pakistan, India, UK and the USA.
In addition to need-blind financial aid, there are fellowships, research support and external scholarship opportunities. This guide will cover the types of Scholarships available, who's eligible, how to apply, and tips on how to increase your chances of securing a scholarship.
💡 Here's a key piece of information: Stanford doesn't provide merit scholarships like most colleges. Financial aid is awarded based on need and the financial assistance is pretty amazing and a lot of families get a lot of aid!

US Student Visa Guidelines for Stanford Students
These are the guidelines that apply to US students wishing to obtain a visa for Stanford. After you have found out that you are accepted and you have your aid package, the next step is obtaining a student visa application. International Students: Here's what you should know.
F-1 Student Visa
The standard visa for full time academic study at Stanford. Valid for the duration of your program. Given after you have been provided with your I-20 document from Stanford's Bechtel International Center.
I-20 Form
The I-20 Certificate of Eligibility is issued by Stanford's international office once you accept your admission and pay Stanford's enrollment deposit. This is necessary to get your F-1 visa.
SEVIS Fee
Filed SEVIS I-901 fee ($350) prior to visa appointment. Save the receipt for future reference. All students at US universities are required to pay this fee if they are international students.
DS-160 Application
Fill out the US State Department online nonimmigrant visa application form (DS-160). Book an appointment for your visa appointment at the nearest US Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
Visa Interview
Bring your I-20, acceptance letter, financial documentation, and passport to your interview. Be ready to show that you are going to go back home after your program. The majority of students at Stanford are approved with no problems.
Arrival & OPT
You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. The F-1 OPT extension provides an opportunity to work in the United States for 12-36 months after graduation, depending on the field of study.
🌍 For students from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and China: Apply for your visa at least 3–4 months in advance. Processing times vary and interview slots can be limited. Stanford's Bechtel International Center provides full support through the visa process once you're admitted.
A house is provided at Stanford University. An on campus house is provided at Stanford University.
On campus housing is guaranteed for all first year undergraduates, and many graduate students at Stanford. Here's what you can do.
Freshman Residences & Dorms
Housing is assigned by lottery to all incoming freshmen to one of Stanford's 80+ residence halls. The Cost of Attendance includes the cost of room and board and your financial aid award will cover all or part of this.
- The cooperative, themed, and traditional dorms are all options
- The meal plan is required for freshmen
- Average room + board: ~$21,000 per year
- On-campus housing is guaranteed for 4 years
Graduate Student Housing
On campus graduate student housing is available at a “below market” rate at Stanford. Apartments are available from studios to families. A lot of the PhD students have housing subsidies as a condition of the fellowship.
- Escondido Village is the most popular graduate housing complex in the nation
- Furnished and unfurnished available
- Pet friendly units available in some buildings
- Priority given to students with families
🏠 Financial aid pays for housing: If financial aid is based on need, Stanford considers the average cost of on campus housing in determining financial aid. If your financial aid pays for the entire Cost of Attendance, then you do not have to pay housing separately.
📌 Off Campus Housing: Palo Alto is one of the highest priced cities in the United States. The cost of renting off campus can be as high as $3000/month for a studio. It is strongly recommended to stay in on-campus housing for cost and convenience.
What if you want to enhance your Stanford scholarship application?
The first step is to get into Stanford. However, a careful preparation is essential to obtain the best possible financial aid offer. Here's what works.
For Undergraduate Applicants
- Fill out the CSS Profile as soon as possible, even before Stanford opens applications. Making the submission early can avoid errors and delays.
- Be completely honest on your financial documents. Inconsistencies result in verification and may slow down or minimize any aid.
- If you are required to submit a financial aid essay, write it specific to your family's circumstances, details are appreciated by the Stanford reviewers.
- Apply Restrictive Early Action (REA) if Stanford is your top choice. Aid will not be greater, but you will gain more time to plan your finances, after you make an early decision.
- If there has been a change in your family's circumstances, or you have incurred significant medical costs, or your job has been lost, etc., appeal your financial aid decision.
- Research other scholarships (such as QuestBridge National College Match for students from low-income families) to help gap the gap between Stanford's aid and your actual cost.
For Graduate & International Applicants
- Research with faculty advisors prior to application. Having a faculty member's recommendation for your application will make it much easier for you to be granted funded admission.
- For graduate students, apply to the Knight Hennessy Scholars Program, which is one of the world's most generous scholarship programs, and is open to all nationalities.
- To supplement or replace Stanford financial aid, apply for external scholarships that are available in the country outside of the U.S. such as Pakistan Higher Education Commission (HEC) scholarship, Indian government scholarship, China Scholarship Council (CSC) funding, etc.
- For PhD programs, contact the departments directly about funding, as many do not post their maximum levels of funding, but do pay all accepted students.
- Be sure to apply to the Fulbright Foreign Student Program in your own country for funding to study at Stanford. This includes tuition, living expenses and airfare.
- Carefully craft your research statement so that it is the primary merit-based document that can determine eligibility for PhD programs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about Stanford University scholarships.
-
Does Stanford offer merit based scholarships separate from financial aid? +
No, Stanford does not offer standalone merit based scholarships that are separate from its need based financial aid program. However, once you're admitted, Stanford's need based system is so generous that it effectively acts like merit aid for most families. If you're admitted on your academic merit, Stanford will fully fund your education based on your financial need. The Knight Hennessy Scholars Program is the closest thing to a merit based full scholarship, but it applies to graduate students.
-
Can international students from Pakistan or India apply for Stanford financial aid? +
Yes, absolutely. Stanford offers financial aid to international students, including those from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, China, and all other countries. For undergraduates, Stanford uses a "need aware" process for international applicants meaning financial need may factor into admission. But once you're admitted, Stanford meets 100% of your demonstrated need through grants. For graduate students and Knight Hennessy Scholars, nationality is not a barrier at all.
-
What is the CSS Profile and why is it required for Stanford? +
The CSS Profile is a financial aid application created by the College Board. It collects more detailed financial information than the standard FAFSA form including home equity, business assets, and sibling educational expenses. Stanford uses the CSS Profile to calculate how much your family can realistically contribute to your education. It's required for all students seeking need based aid, both domestic and international. The application fee can be waived for low income families.
-
How competitive is the Knight Hennessy Scholars Program? +
The Knight Hennessy Scholars Program is extremely competitive it selects roughly 100 scholars each year from thousands of applicants globally. However, the program is open to students from all countries and all fields, which makes it uniquely broad. Successful applicants typically have exceptional academic records, clear leadership experience, and a compelling vision for their future impact. Being admitted to a Stanford graduate program is a prerequisite, so you must apply to both the KH program and a Stanford department simultaneously.
-
Can I appeal my Stanford financial aid decision? +
Yes. Stanford has a formal appeal process for financial aid awards. You can submit an appeal if your family's financial situation has changed since filing your CSS Profile for example, due to job loss, unexpected medical expenses, a divorce, or a natural disaster. Appeals are reviewed by Stanford's Financial Aid Office and are often successful when supported with documentation. It's worth doing if you feel the initial award doesn't reflect your real financial situation.
-
Are PhD programs at Stanford fully funded? +
Yes, in most cases. The vast majority of students admitted to Stanford's PhD programs receive full funding including tuition coverage, a living stipend, and health insurance. Funding typically comes through departmental fellowships, the Stanford Graduate Fellowship program, research assistantships, or teaching assistantships. It's rare for a Stanford PhD student to pay out of pocket for tuition. However, funding for terminal master's programs (non-research) is more limited and varies by department.
