If you miss a deadline, the file will not be read. This guide outlines all of Stanford University's application deadlines. It also helps to take a look at the Stanford University acceptance rate and rankings before starting to apply.

Dates below reflect Stanford's published cycle. Deadlines can shift by a day or two each year, so confirm the exact dates on the official admission site before you apply.

Restrictive Early Action vs Regular Decision

Apply by around November 1 for Restrictive Early Action, or by early January for Regular Decision. Both share the same May 1 reply date.

REA is non-binding but restrictive: you can't apply early to most other private universities at the same time. Here's how the two rounds line up side by side.

REA is not binding, so you don't have to enrol if admitted. But its "restrictive" rule limits applying early to other private colleges. Read the full policy on Stanford's site before choosing your round.

Graduate applicants

Applying for a Graduate Program?

Every Stanford graduate program sets its own deadline, format, and requirements.

The dates above are for first-year undergraduates. Each department manages its own graduate program, typically with deadlines in early December to early January. Begin with the program you'd like to join.

Master's Stanford MS Computer Science

Transcripts, essays and GRE submitted via the department portal.

Doctorate Stanford PhD Computer Science

Fit and recommendation letters are most important.

Business Stanford MBA Program

Three rounds, essay and GMAT or GRE scores.

Always check requirements on the official graduate admissions website.

Tips for International Applicants

  • Begin 3 months ahead of time. It takes time to receive transcripts and translations from outside the country.
  • Book tests early. Many countries sell out SAT and ACT seats quickly, so make sure to sign up early.
  • Chase your referees. They have to get their letters in on time too, and they might forget!
  • Submit two days early. Common issues near the cutoff include slow internet and payment inaccuracies.
  • Check your missing-documents notice. Check your e-mail at Stanford and you will find out what else is required.

Application Deadlines: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Stanford application deadline for 2026 entry?

Restrictive Early Action is due around November 1, and Regular Decision is due in early January (about January 5). Both lead to the same May 1 reply deadline. Always confirm the exact dates on Stanford's official admission site, as they can shift slightly each year.

Is Restrictive Early Action binding at Stanford?

No. REA is non-binding, so you don't have to enrol if admitted. However, it is "restrictive," meaning you generally cannot apply early to other private universities at the same time. You still have until May 1 to decide.

When will I get my admission decision?

Restrictive Early Action decisions are released around mid-December. Regular Decision results arrive by late March or early April. REA applicants may also be deferred, meaning their application is reviewed again with the Regular Decision pool.

What is the financial aid deadline?

The priority financial aid deadline is November 15 for Restrictive Early Action and February 15 for Regular Decision. Submit the CSS Profile and required documents by these dates to be considered on time. International students are eligible for need-based aid.

Do international students have different deadlines?

No, international first-year applicants follow the same REA and RD deadlines. Just leave extra time for English proficiency tests and sending official scores from abroad, so everything arrives before the cutoff.

What happens after I'm admitted?

You have until May 1 to accept or decline your offer. If you enrol, a final official transcript showing your graduation date is due by July 1. Miss these and your place can be at risk, so mark them early.

Is the time line in California or my time?

Application deadlines for first year students are 11:59 p.m. ET. It is not necessary to adjust your time zone to Pacific to submit.

Can international students apply Restrictive Early Action?

Yes. The November 1 early plan is open to international students too. Does not bind the person, so may still refuse if accepted.

What if I do not submit the work on time?

Late applications for that cycle will not be accepted as late first year applications. It would take you another year to apply, so make a note of it!

Is there one deadline for all graduate programs?

No. This is done by each department separately, typically in December or January. Please refer to the individual page of the program for the exact deadline.

What is the best time to apply for financial aid?

Open your CSS Profile and IDOC when they go live on October 1st and file by February 15th for Regular Decision. Don't wait for your admission result.

Miss the essay, not the deadline.

The single easiest way to lose a Stanford application is a missed date. Pick your round now, work backwards from the deadline, and give recommendations and test scores plenty of lead time. Then confirm every date on Stanford's official admission site before you file.
